Dr Elizabeth Joekes

After medical school and a junior post in Emergency Medicine in Amsterdam, Liz completed specialty training in Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology in Leiden, The Netherlands.

She later worked for three years as Head of Department of Radiology in the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Ghana, before taking up an NHS post in Liverpool, specializing in Tropical and Infectious Diseases Radiology.

She has collaborated on research projects with a focus on Tuberculosis, Schistosomiasis, and Stroke in people living with HIV, both in Malawi and Gabon. Implementation of point-of-care ultrasound in resource-limited settings is a further area of interest.

She is a team member of the International Multi-disciplinary Programme to Address Lung Health and TB in Africa (IMPALA) and co-investigator on the "Increasing Patient Safety through Point-of-Care Ultrasound in Malawi - (IPSUM)" study, with Hamburg-Eppendorf University Hospital. She is an external Radiology advisor for MSF and has very recently co-founded Worldwide Radiology, a UK-based charity supporting diagnostic imaging in resource limited settings.
